What to Expect After Voting Closes

The Senegal Presidential Election has come, and in a few minutes, voting will end. Voting in Senegal is from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The election has been mostly peaceful, with about 50,000 security personnel deployed to keep the peace and protect electoral stations. There are no incidents of violence. There are a few disputes for missing names from the voter list, but nothing significant has been reported.

After the poll closes, votes are expected to be sorted and counted. The process of sorting and counting is outlined in the Senegal Electoral Code. It starts with the President of the polling station declaring that voting has closed, after which he will record it, and after that, no voting  Can be done again.

After the close of the vote, the ballot box is opened, and the ballot envelopes are accounted against the signatures of votes to confirm they are not more than the number of persons who voted. Four people who can read in French are chosen and will help extract the ballot from the envelope. The names on the ballot will be read out loud and recorded.

Where the envelope has more than one ballot, the vote is void. Blank Ballots are counted separately and will not be considered when determining the votescast. Invalid ballots or envelopes are annexed to the polling station report, which all poll station officials sign. The President of the polling station then reads the result out loud, after which results will be posted on the wall.

All department (local authority) results are collated and counted, and results are released no later than Midnight on the Tuesday following the elections. The results for the departments under each region are transmitted to the national voting counting commission, which will collate all votes from the regions and announce a provisional result no later than midnight on Friday following the election. The national voting counting commission results are transmitted to the President of the Constitutional Council, who determines election disputes and declares the final results.
