As Ghanaians prepare to exercise their democratic rights in the 2024 elections, the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) and its Factchecking arm – DUBAWA reaffirm our commitment to supporting inclusive, transparent, and credible electoral processes.
In doing this, CJID released two pre-election reports on citizens’ perception and Misinformation/Disinformation Threats and Patterns. We have also deployed 19 observers and fact-checkers to track election disinformation, thereby promoting electoral accountability.
CJID’s Initiatives for Ghana’s 2024 Elections
Media in National Elections (MiNE)
Through the MiNE initiative, CJID is deploying trained personnel to observe the electoral process, ensure adherence to democratic standards, and provide detailed reports on the conduct of the elections.
Verification, Fact-checking, and Election Literacy Campaign
CJID’s fact-checking platform, DUBAWA, is working tirelessly to verify election-related information. We are also focused on ensuring that voters and stakeholders can access accurate, unbiased information to make informed decisions.
We have been tracking emerging threats posed by technology, including the misuse of artificial intelligence, bots, and disinformation campaigns. CJID’s information and AI analysis Centre, DAIDAC, provides insights into how technology impacts electoral integrity and voter perception, especially on social media platforms. In our latest publication, “Agyapadie Circus: A Make-Believe Toxic Politico-Ethnic Document for Election,” our findings highlight the utilisation of social media for political propaganda before the elections. We have observed a surge in unusual pages and groups sprouting recently.
We have also been actively working with META to track election-related disinformation on all its platforms, helping to ensure that Ghana’s information space remains free of electoral fakes and fabrications.
Who are we working with?
With three situation rooms in Accra, Tamale, and Kumasi, CJID is collaborating with the Ghana Fact-checking Coalition, the West African Network for Peace-Building (WANEP), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and TIKTOK. These collaborations will see that real-time updates and insights into the electoral process are provided, verified information to counteract misinformation that could undermine the democratic process is provided timeously, and the spread of misinformation on social media platforms is greatly curtailed.
Scaling Up Efforts with Nineteen Personnel
CJID is proud to announce the deployment of nineteen (19) personnel, expert observers, OSINT analysts, and fact-checkers to support Ghana’s electoral process. They will work collaboratively to enhance transparency, counter information disorders, and safeguard the electoral process in Ghana.
