Escalating Threats on Journalism: A Compendium of Press Freedom Violations in Nigeria from May, 2023 to December 2024

A free and independent press is a vital element in democratic societies. It serves as an instrument of accountability and an avenue for the citizens’ voices to be heard. Journalists serve as the watchdogs of society to hold power accountable and uncover the truth behind complex societal issues. Through their reporting on various platforms, the press provides a voice to the marginalised and brings attention to pressing social issues. However, there are concerns about Nigeria’s increasing spate of press freedom violations. Almost daily, Nigerian journalists continue to face various forms of attacks, including harassment, intimidation, violence, and even kidnap, all of which hamper citizen participation and weaken accountability mechanisms. The CJID’s Press Attack Tracker (PAT), a civic technology tool that tracks, verifies, and documents incidents of press freedom violations in Nigeria, has recorded 1209 press freedom violations between 1986 and November 2024.
