CJID, Women Radio partner for International Women’s Day Dialogue to Unpack Nigeria’s 2024 Budget and Its Implications for Women

As Nigeria continues to implement its budgetary allocations for 2024, there is a pressing need to examine the specific implications of these provisions on the well-being of women across various sectors.

In this light, the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID), in collaboration with Women Radio 91.7 FM, is pleased to organise a Media Dialogue themed: “Unpacking Nigeria’s 2024 Budget: Implications for Women” to commemorate the International Women’s Day. The Zoom Dialogue is scheduled for Friday, March 8, 2024 at 3:00pm WAT.

A Premium Times analysis reveals that, in 2024, the federal government allocated less than 1% of the N27.5 trillion budget to Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) programmes. This represents an 82% decrease from the N78 billion allocated to WEE in 2023. Only 107 WEE projects were proposed in 2024, a far cry from the 442 projects allocated in 2023—the lowest allocation since 2019.

In the midst of all these, the Ministry of Women Affairs has an approved budget of N10 billion in the 2024 fiscal year, covering overhead, personnel, and capital projects. While this underscores the government’s commitment to women empowerment, there is a need to analyze and discuss the impact of budgetary decisions on the socio-economic well-being of women.

This media dialogue is designed to foster informed discussions on the impact of fiscal provisions on healthcare, empowerment and overall development of women. We aim to raise awareness, encourage public discourse, and drive accountability in policymaking around issues that affect women.

The event will be moderated by the Head, Programmes, Women Radio, Esther Alaribe. The proposed speakers and discussants for the event are Osasuyi Dirisu (PhD), Executive Director of the Policy Innovation Centre, Ogechi Okebugwu, Programme Coordinator of the Smallscale Women Farmers Organisation in Nigeria, Emmanuella Azu, Programme Director, Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre and Nnaemeka Ajunwa – Digital Health Lead, Reliance Health
Interested participants can register for the event using the provided link.
