13 December 2023 — On the solemn occasion of the 25th anniversary of the tragic and unjust death of investigative journalist Norbert Zongo, the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) unites with the CENOZO to demand justice for this heinous crime.
Norbert Zongo, known for his commitment to truth, transparency, and justice, exemplified the essence of journalistic integrity. However, 25 years later, justice remains evasive. The recent setback from the Court of Justice of the European Union in blocking the extradition procedure of the alleged perpetrator, currently exiled in France, is a stark reminder of the persistent obstacles impeding the quest for justice.
CJID echoes CENOZO’s call for national and international civil society organisations to unite to ensure that the voices of journalists are never silenced. This includes safeguarding their pursuit of truth and transparency, with justice not only for Norbert Zongo but for every journalist who has paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.
CENOZO’s dedication to honouring Norbert Zongo’s legacy by promoting investigative journalism, protecting journalists, and defending the right to information resonates deeply with the CJID’s mission.
Today, the CJID calls upon the solidarity of all organisations championing human rights and freedom of expression. We urge the European Union, the French authorities, and the Burkinabe authorities to shed full light on the heinous crime of Norbert Zongo’s murder.
It is important that justice prevails and accountability is established for the sake of press freedom and the protection of journalists worldwide.
