The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) commends the conduct of the Ondo State Governorship Election held on November 16, 2024. Our observation team deployed across the state has noted several improvements in the process and areas requiring attention to enhance the integrity and efficiency of future elections.
Key Observations:
- Logistics Improvement:
CJID observed a significant improvement in election logistics following the Governorship elections in Edo State. The Registration Area Centers (RACs) were activated 100%, facilitating the early deployment of electoral materials and personnel to polling units on election day. - Security Arrangements:
Each polling unit was adequately secured by a mix of personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Immigration Service, and Nigeria Customs Service. Additionally, checkpoints across the state were manned by the Army and Police, ensuring a secure environment for the exercise. However, at RA 08, PUs 001 and 002, Idanre Local Government Area, we noticed the presence of armed policemen within the polling area, this contradicts the best practices for non-deployment of armed security agents within polling areas. - Voter Turnout:
The election witnessed low voter turnout, this trend is to be expected as findings from the CJID Citizens’ Perception Survey revealed that many citizens had grown disillusioned with electoral institutions, political parties, and the quality of candidates fielded for election, which contributed to their reluctance to participate. Voter apathy requires strategic interventions to rekindle citizens’ trust in the electoral process and encourage greater participation. - Challenges with BVAS:
In RA 06, Polling Unit 001, Idanre, six voters could not vote as the BVAS could not verify their details, despite possessing valid permanent voter cards. This issue highlights the need for further refinement of the BVAS technology to ensure inclusivity and efficiency. - Quality of Ad-hoc Staff:
While some ad-hoc staff performed commendably, we observed challenges with the competence of non-NYSC members serving as Assistant Presiding Officers. These personnel must receive more comprehensive training on electoral processes to enhance their capacity.
General Assessment:
The election was largely peaceful, with no reports of widespread violence or disruptions. CJID acknowledges the efforts of INEC, security agencies, and other stakeholders in ensuring a credible process. We await the conclusion of the collation and the declaration of a winner, after which we will issue a comprehensive report of the elections. As always, CJID remains committed to supporting democratic consolidation and electoral integrity in Nigeria.
