The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) is seeking an experienced professional to join our team as a Project Manager for our Media Freedom initiative in West Africa. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual passionate about promoting media freedom, freedom of expression, and the safety of journalists.

The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) is a not-for-profit West African media innovation and development think (and do) tank. We are a technology and knowledge-producing think tank that supports & empowers the media.

Job Title: Project Manager, Media Freedom

Location: Abuja 

Key Responsibilities:

As the Project Manager for Media Freedom, you will be responsible for:

  • Leading and overseeing the planning, execution, and evaluation of projects aimed at promoting media freedom in Anglophone West Africa.
  • Monitoring and evaluating the state of press freedom and journalist safety in Anglophone West Africa and collaborating with stakeholders, partners, and relevant organizations to protect and promote press freedom.
  • Developing and managing project budgets, timelines, and resources effectively.
  • Contributing to the development of funding proposals and engaging with donors.
    Monitoring and evaluating project outcomes, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • At least a Master’s or PhD degree in Journalism, Law, International Relations, Philosophy, or related disciplines with demonstrated knowledge of media freedom issues and demonstrated knowledge through publication on major media or research platforms.
  • A minimum of [3-5] years of project management experience, preferably in media-related initiatives or similar roles.
  • Strong knowledge of journalism and safety issues, media freedom issues, and freedom of expression.
  • Strong research and data skills
  • Excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Proven experience in advocacy, stakeholder engagement, partnership building, and donor relations.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team.
